Angul: The vigilance department of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), probing Nandiraunderground coal mine scam, has charge sheeted the company’s senior manager (measurement)  P C Dasgupta for allegedly misappropriating crores of rupees.

The vigilance officials on Saturday affixed a copy of the department’s chargesheet on the wall of Dasgupta’s house at Talcher as he is on the run. Dasgupta retired on June 30, sources said. The vigilance wing started probing the case after it found a shortfall of coal at Nandira coalmine in Talcher coalfield. The MCL incurred a loss of around Rs 16 crore due to the scam, sources said. A team of vigilance sleuths, headed by deputy general manager P K Sinha, raided the stockyard of Nandira coalmine on April 5. The team found a shortfall of 48,917.45 tonne of coal. Chief general manager (Talcher area) H K Roul said action will be taken against those found guilty.

Production from collieries is transported to railway sidings where coal stocks are maintained for loading into wagons. The MCL has taken several steps for enhancing coal production and bridging the demand-supply gap. However, sometimes unscrupulous officials are embroiled in irregularities, leading to coal shortage, alleged trade union leader Badal Moharana. He demanded an impartial inquiry into the alleged scam.
