New Delhi: Vinod Rai’s tenure as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India ends on Wednesday. Rai’s five years in office are seen as controversial given the CAG reports on the coal scam and the 2G spectrum allocation scam. Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma will take charge as the new CAG, but his appointment is already being questioned.

Vinod Rai is the man who caused a big embarrassment to the UPA government. His audit reports on the 2G spectrum allocation and the coal scam put unthinkable numbers to corruption generating political storms both inside and outside Parliament, severely denting the UPA government’s image and providing ammunition to the Opposition.

As Vinod Rai demits office, his successor experts say has a huge task lies ahead of him. TSR Subramaniyam, former cabinet secretary said, “He did his job well, it was a constitutional post. Shashi Kant Sharma has to really live up to it.”

Some though are already raising questions now on the appointment of Shashi Kant Sharma as CAG. He is the Defence Secretary who had overseen several defence procurements of UPA government.

The government ministers have openly challenged the figures of the CAG on various audits. Now, as Vinod Rai leaves office, his opponents are again planning to rake up the questions raised by his subordinate turned rival RP Singh.

The debate on what Rai did as CAG will continue to rage long after the completion of his innings.
