The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested the director, South Zone, Directorate General of Mines Safety, Bangalore, for taking bribe from various quarry owners in the state from Kochi, on Tuesday.

The arrested was identified as Narasayya, 51, from Andhra Pradesh. According to the CBI, the arrested person has been in Kerala for the past one week and has conducted meetings with various quarry owners in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. CBI officials said that they conducted a secret operation and nabbed the accused demanding and taking bribe red handed.

They also seized Rs 4 lakhs which Narasayya collected as bribe from various quarry owners. “The accused threatened the quarry owners saying that legal action would be initiated for not having the proper safety gears at their quarries and then demand bribe. He was demanding bribes of more than Rs 1 lakh from a single quarry owner. He came here to travel across the state and check the safety methods adopted in the quarries,” a CBI official said.The arrested person would be produced before the Ernakulam CBI Special Court on Wednesday.
